A university building in the center of the French metropolis of Marseille will be temporarily closed due to drug trafficking in the immediate area. The safety of the approximately 1,500 students and employees cannot be guaranteed. Lectures temporarily take place online.
“There is more and more drug trafficking in the area,” said an employee of the University of Aux-Marseille, who did not want to give his name. “The traders loudly offer their goods, it’s like a fish market,” he explained. “Drug trafficking used to take place here, but it happened more discreetly,” says one of his colleagues.
The precarious situation in the city has become even worse
The southern French port city of Marseille has been struggling with a drug trafficking problem for decades. Recently, however, violence in the drug world has increased. More than forty people have died since the beginning of this year, including some accidental victims.
The prefecture admits that the situation has deteriorated. However, there are even more special units in service, which are on the road in the area every day.
