Five arrests – Christian pilgrims are mocked again in Jerusalem

Date:

On Tuesday, a video circulated on social media showing ultra-Orthodox Jews – including children – encountering Christian pilgrims carrying a large wooden cross in an alley in the Old City. Several Jews currently celebrating the Feast of Tabernacles are spitting in the direction of pilgrims and church entrances. Israeli police subsequently reported five arrests.

The video led to sharp criticism in Israel, including from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the two Chief Rabbis. Netanyahu said: “Israel is absolutely committed to securing the sacred rights of religious practice and pilgrimage to the holy places of all religions.”

“Despicable phenomenon”
Jerusalem police chief Doron Turgeman stressed that no hostility would be tolerated, whether against Christians, Muslims or Jews. “Sadly, we see a continuation of the despicable and ugly phenomenon of hostility against Christians in the Old City of Jerusalem.”

Fines possible for perpetrators
A special team will be formed to tackle the problem. They want to take tougher action against the phenomenon, openly and secretly, using technological means and are also considering fines for perpetrators.
