British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak surprisingly announced a strict anti-tobacco policy at the Tory party conference in Manchester. Under Sunak’s plan, all 14-year-old Britons will never be able to legally buy tobacco products.
Rishi Sunak wants to ban smoking for future generations, following the example of New Zealand.
The British Prime Minister announced a tough anti-tobacco plan at the annual meeting of the Tories: “I propose that in future we increase the tobacco age limit by one year every year. This means that 14-year-olds today will never be able to legally buy cigarettes again.”
Under the plan, the sale of tobacco products to anyone born after January 1, 2009 would become illegal. Young people’s access to e-cigarettes should also be severely limited. This plan is welcomed by health organizations, but of course criticized by the tobacco industry.
“A question of conscience”
Sunak also said the changes would be subject to a free vote in Parliament, as were previous ones that banned smoking in public places and raised the smoking age to 18. There is no ‘stick’ that the government would use; the anti-tobacco course is rather ‘a matter of conscience’
New Zealand as a role model
New Zealand is a role model. At the beginning of this year, the purchase of tobacco was banned for anyone born after 2009. From 2027, the minimum age for purchasing cigarettes will increase by one year every year.
