With six refugees from Russia – including a small child – in the vehicle, the police in Rosental in Carinthia arrested a Croatian smuggler (48).
Extraordinary smugglers’ entry in Schlatten in the municipality of Sankt Jakob im Rosental: Just a few kilometers after the Slovenian border, the police stopped a Mercedes with a Croatian license plate in the afternoon. A Croat was driving the vehicle with six people: a boy of about two years old, two women (20, 25) and three men.
They were all Russian citizens who could not provide documents necessary for their stay. The handcuffs clicked on the spot for Croatian driver Nino L. (48). The Public Prosecution Service placed him in pre-trial detention on suspicion of smuggling. And so the officers initially ‘escorted’ him straight to Klagenfurt prison.
Application for international protection
His six illegal passengers requested international protection. The interrogations of the five Russians, including an interpreter, were still ongoing on Friday. But everything indicates that the three men (20, 25, 35 years old) fled their home country for fear of conscription. In early October, Russia called up 140,000 young men for service.
