For the second time in just a few days, Russian forces have shot down one of their own fighter jets in Ukraine. Several Russian Telegram channels unanimously reported the incident on Friday. Images circulating online allegedly show the smoking wreckage.
According to reports, Russia’s Su-35 fighter jet was knocked out of the sky by its own air defenses near the occupied city of Mariupol on Friday. The pilot survived the shooting.
“No more planes soon”
“With this rate of our brave air defense we will soon run out of planes,” Russian military blogger “Fighterbomber” responded sarcastically on Telegram about the incident. On the Ukrainian side, reports and videos of the incident were widely shared. They have not been officially confirmed by Russian authorities.
This video is intended to show the burning wreckage of the crashed plane:
‘Friendly Fire’ is a notorious problem
Mark Cancian, a retired US Marine colonel and now a consultant for the CSIS think tank, told Newsweek magazine that Russia has a history of friendly fire. During the war against Georgia in 2008, three of the six aircraft were shot down.
Just eight days ago, Russian anti-aircraft defenses shot down an Su-35 near the occupied city of Tokmak in southern Ukraine. According to the British Ministry of Defense, Russia has lost a total of around 90 fighter jets since the start of the war of aggression in Ukraine.
