Iranian authorities: – “16-year-old in coma due to low blood pressure”

Date:

In Iran, another 16-year-old boy is in a coma, reportedly seriously injured by the moral police. Armita Garawand apparently violated the headscarf requirement and was arrested on Sunday. However, Iranian authorities spread a different version: the teenager allegedly fainted due to “low blood pressure”.

The state news agency Irma published interviews with two friends of the injured who confirmed the authorities’ information. Another news agency even denied the arrest and accused foreign media of trying to spread “riot and chaos.” According to the NGO Hengaw, 16-year-old Armita was seriously injured on Sunday when she was apparently arrested by the moral police in the subway for violating the headscarf requirement. She is therefore in a coma.

Mother arrested after criticism
In the meantime, the mother of the young people was reportedly arrested because she criticized the limited visiting options in the hospital. According to the NGO, she was taken to an unknown location.

The incident continues to cause a lot of commotion. Some governments of several countries, including Germany and the US, expressed concern about Iranian girls and women. “A young woman in Iran is fighting for her life again. “Only because she showed her hair in the subway,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) wrote on platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. “It’s unbearable.”

Here you can see Annalena Baerbock’s tweet.

A similar incident a year ago
The minister is referring to the death of the young Kurdish Mahsa Amini about a year ago. She was also arrested by the moral police because she allegedly did not wear her headscarf correctly. Her death sparked months of protests against Iran’s leadership. Since her death, authorities in the country have also increased their vigilance for possible reasons for protests.

Even more pressure on women
In recent weeks they have increased pressure on women to follow strict dress codes, including the hijab, the Islamic headscarf that is mandatory in Iran. Although significantly fewer women have worn the mandatory headscarf since the protests, they are still exposed to hostility in everyday life (see video above). Iran’s Foreign Ministry described criticism from Germany and the US as “interference” by the West. These are ‘biased comments’ and ‘disingenuous concern’.
