Three Cobra operations within 24 hours kept the police in Lower Austria on edge: from Friday evening, a large contingent of special forces was needed in Melk, Tulln and Saturday morning in Winklarn in the Amstetten district.
After a family dispute escalated in the Mostviertel, a man allegedly threatened his partner and her daughter with a gun. The armed man then barricaded himself in a single-family home and the settlement was cordoned off over a large area.
The executive managed to resolve the situation “quickly and unspectacularly,” as a police spokesperson emphasized. The perpetrator must have quickly recognized his hopeless situation. Officials from the Rapid Intervention Group (SIG) were also at the scene. During his arrest, a gas pistol was seized from the man and he is now accused of dangerous threats and coercion.
Further use in Tulln
Only a short time later, a family dispute in Tulln resulted in the Cobra task force being alerted as well. After special forces surrounded a house in the flower city on Friday evening, a rapid attack followed. This allowed us to quickly get the situation under control. The exact background is currently unclear and is the subject of research. There would be no injuries.
Special forces also in the Amstetten district
Saturday morning it continued quickly: this time the special units of Cobra and SIG were warned for a morning operation in Winklarn in the Amstetten district. According to the first information, there would also be multiple weapons. Entry has already been completed and the operation has “ended on a light note,” as police explained upon request.
As is now known, a relationship dispute between spouses in a restaurant would have raised alarms. The man is said to have abused his wife and a report has been filed. After the physical altercation, he drove home and allegedly ‘barricaded himself’ there. After the officers asked him to do so, he voluntarily left the house.
Two weapons seized
Two weapons – believed to be a rifle and a pistol – were seized at the scene and the investigation is ongoing. An entry ban was issued. “In this case, the Cobra was requested because they were already traveling in Lower Austria,” the police said.
