The opposition Fritz list invited EU representatives to a local inspection in Tyrol on Friday. Their approach: “The transit problem can only be solved at European level!”
The 700 EU parliamentarians apparently have little idea what it is like on the Brenner Pass – the busiest Alpine pass with 2.5 million trucks and 14 million cars per year. At least two of them came up with an idea on Friday at the invitation of the Fritz list: French MEP Sandro Gozi of the Renew Europe group, the third largest group in the EU Parliament, and his group colleague Engin Eroglu, member of the “ Free voters”. They were “astonished at the volume that traffic on the Brenner has now reached”.
No chance without a network
“Tyrol has never had so few allies in the transit dispute as now,” explains List Fritz club boss Markus Sint. “But without a network in the EU, we will continue to hit a wall within the EU in the coming years,” says Sint. He sees the Fritz list in good hands with the European Democratic Party: “We looked for allies and found friends.”
“Race with Death”
LA Andrea Haselwanter-Schneider sees the safety of the population at risk due to excessive traffic, even on alternative routes through the communities of the Wipptal: “Medical emergencies become such a race with death that is unthinkable if the weather does not allow rescue flight.”
Create understanding in Bavaria
The visitors were concerned: “It is important for our group to get to know the problems on the ground,” Eroglu said, promising to “bring the problem to Bavaria and support our party leader Hubert Aiwanger, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs . , for Tyrolean concerns to increase awareness”.
Florian Riedl, Tyrol’s vice-president of transport, criticized the visit, citing the “anti-Tyrolean vocal behavior” of the members of the European Parliament on transport issues.
