With the relaxation of corona restrictions in Italy from Friday, unvaccinated teachers will be allowed to return to work if they present a negative rapid test. However, they should not come into contact with students and should not teach, but should only be used for other tasks in the school, as the Ministry of Education in Rome has decided. The decision sparked protests and the ministry is threatened with several lawsuits.
According to the Ministry of Education, unvaccinated teachers should be used in school libraries and in school laboratories. They are expected to work 36 hours a week, twice as much as their current teaching job. They are de facto placed on an equal footing with administrative staff. Previously, teachers who could not show a 2G badge were not allowed to work and were suspended.
School directors protest
The association of school directors protested the cabinet decision after the relaxation of the corona restrictions. The possibilities for using unvaccinated teachers in the school system are limited. The danger is that teachers are paid who are de facto unable to work. The association also warned of the risk of a wave of lawsuits against unvaccinated teachers being stripped of their right to teach.
Secretary of State for Education Rossano Sasso said he was willing to review the ministry’s regulation. “Teachers who take a Pap smear every 48 to 72 hours pose no danger to students. We are working to correct aspects of the law that go against common sense,” said the state secretary.
State of emergency in Italy over
In Italy, the corona-related state of emergency imposed by the government in Rome more than two years ago – on January 31, 2020 – ended on Thursday. With the end of the state of emergency, on which several government anti-pandemic measures are based, several easing of corona restrictions will come into effect on Friday.
2G mandatory in hotels
Italy will be one of the last European countries to relax corona rules from April. From April 1, 2G will no longer be mandatory in hotels, public transport and shops. Proof of vaccination, recovery or testing is no longer required. The quarantine regulations are almost completely lifted: in the future, only those who are infected will have to isolate themselves and contact persons can leave their home at any time.
