Five weeks ago a baby was born in Styria – without eyes. Donations are now being collected for a guide dog. The “Krone” and its readers are helping!
Little Jonas’ mother is a ‘professional boy mom’: she had three sons before the adorable newborn, who is now five weeks old. But that’s exactly why the Styrian woman immediately commented after the uncomplicated birth: “He was cute, smiling – but kept his eyes closed. And I never opened them at all!”
She immediately indicated this, at first they said: it will be fine, they are still connected, let’s give it time. “But I immediately had a bad feeling. Also because my eyes seemed so flat under the closed eyelids.”
Rare genetic defect in Jonas
An ultrasound confirmed the mother’s uneasy feeling: “Jonas has a form of the extremely rare genetic defect nanophthalmos. He was born without eyes.”
First, the world came crashing down on the family. Now we look ahead: “Jonas must be able to grow up as normally as possible. But we have to prepare for it.”
The family is faced with an avalanche of costs
The community where the popular family lives immediately started a fundraising campaign. Because they are faced with a gigantic cost avalanche. Renovation work throughout the house (largely financed by outsiders, as is the case with most house builders) so that the little one does not get hurt. He is still helpless, like any newborn. He will soon be able to crawl, but unlike other babies, he won’t be able to see. He never will.
There are high costs for treatments abroad! “There is a center in Germany that specializes in genetic defects.” Of course: treatments, accommodations, travel, that is beyond the reach of the hardworking family.
Special computers cost thousands of euros
And there is also temporary care that needs to be financed. The start of school – this is also something to think about with horror from a financial perspective. “A computer with only Braille costs thousands of euros”
What is very important for the family: a guide dog. Who – after his long training – leads and guides little, blind Jonas from the start, always protects him and is there for him.
