A 45-year-old Czech man ended a climbing trip in the Götzis municipality of Vorarlberg on Sunday with serious injuries – including suspension trauma. The man and three friends had climbed a via ferrata with inadequate equipment, fell on the rope and became stuck upside down.
Four Czechs walked through the Örflaschlucht in Götzis to the via ferrata on Sunday evening. Although the men were inadequately rested, they began the climb and almost reached the exit.
Fall into the rope
Because one member of the group could not get any further, the four got out again. During the descent, a 45-year-old fell on the rope due to exhaustion, got stuck upside down and the others were unable to free him from his predicament, prompting the mountain rescue service to be alerted.
Difficult recovery
When the mountain rescue team arrived, the victim, who had suffered suspension trauma, was already unconscious. During a complex rescue operation that lasted three hours, the Czech was rescued from the vertical wall on a stretcher and then taken to the Rankweil State Hospital with serious injuries.
Large-scale operation with 65 people
The extremely difficult operation involved 15 people from the Hohenems mountain rescue service, 22 people from the Rankweil mountain rescue service, 25 Floianis from the Götzis fire brigade and three police officers.
