Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni posted a video on social networks showing a group of protesters chanting sexist refrains against her in the Rome metro. These were demonstrators who took part in a large meeting of the strongest Italian trade union federation, CGIL, in Rome on Saturday.
The video shows a protester wearing a red T-shirt and holding a rolled up flag as he uses a loudspeaker to shout sexist insults at Meloni during a subway ride, which was also joined by other people. Meloni released the video on Sunday afternoon and called on CGIL leader Maurizio Landini to condemn the protesters’ behavior, which he did.
“I strongly condemn these violent and sexist insults, which are not part of our culture. Our trade union federation has always been committed to combating all forms of physical and verbal violence, and to overcoming the patriarchal culture that is the cause of all forms of violence against women,” said Landini.
The opposition also condemned the insults in the video
Meloni received statements of solidarity from all political camps, including the opposition. “These are behaviors unworthy of a civilized country,” said former Industry Minister Carlo Calenda, head of the centrist “Azione” party.
Tens of thousands of people took part in a demonstration by trade unions and other left-wing groups on Saturday. There were protests against the economic policies of the right-wing government led by Meloni, who has ruled Italy for a year.
