Iran’s leadership denies any involvement in the wave of terror launched by the Palestinian terror group Hamas this weekend and threatens a “devastating response” if the country is attacked by Israel or the US (see video above).
Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said Monday: “You should know that any idiotic action against Iran will be met with a devastating response.” Iran also convened an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Iran’s Foreign Ministry said regional developments should be discussed there. Iran was not involved in the attacks that killed 700 Israelis and kidnapped dozens of others by Hamas. The OIC consists of 57 states with a high proportion of Muslim populations and is, according to its own information, the second largest organization after the United Nations.
Tehran: “Turning Point” of the Resistance
However, the mullah regime spoke of “legitimate defense against the Israeli occupation” in connection with the massive rocket and drone attacks and the hit squads. Kanaani himself congratulated Hamas after Saturday’s attack, describing it as a “turning point” in the armed resistance. A military adviser to Iranian religious leader Ali Khamenei, Commander Rahim Safawi, said on Saturday: “We support this operation and we are sure that the resistance front also supports this cause.”
The White House said it was too early to say whether Iran was directly involved in the attack. The US has no evidence of this. However, there is no doubt that Hamas was “financed, equipped and armed” by the Islamic Republic. Tehran, for its part, said it “supports the legitimate defense of the Palestinian nation.” “There was a transfer of weapons and know-how to enable the local production of missiles,” David Rigoulet-Roze, a Middle East expert at the French think tank IRIS, told radio station France Info. Israeli researcher Michael is convinced that “Hamas would not have dared to launch such an operation without the support of Hezbollah and Iran.”
About a thousand fighters infiltrated Israel
Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Israel has been Iran’s declared arch enemy. Since the 1990s, Tehran has expanded its political and military ties in the region to create an “axis of resistance” against Israel, with the support of Shia militias. The attack by Hamas and other Palestinian militant organizations was the worst attack on Israel since the Yom Kippur War, exactly fifty years ago. The Palestinian organization that rules the Gaza Strip unexpectedly launched its major attack on Saturday morning. It fired thousands of rockets into Israel and entered Israeli territory with an estimated 1,000 fighters, according to the Israeli army.
Israeli hostages killed in bombings?
Hamas fighters have killed and kidnapped civilians and soldiers in Israel. According to preliminary information, more than 700 people were killed on the Israeli side and more than 2,100 others were injured. Israel responded by bombing hundreds of targets in the Gaza Strip. Nearly 558 people have been killed and 2,800 injured so far, according to local authorities.
There is great concern about the fate of more than a hundred Israelis abducted to the Gaza Strip. According to Palestinian information, four Israeli hostages have been killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza. The information provided by a spokesman for the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamist Hamas, could not be independently verified.
