Also children among them – Myanmar: 29 dead after attack on refugee camp

Date:

A military attack on a camp for displaced people in northern Myanmar killed 29 people and injured dozens. “We found 29 bodies, including children and the elderly (…) 56 people were injured,” spokesman for the rebel group Kachin Independence Army (KIA) that controls the area, Colonel Naw Bu, told AFP news agency on Tuesday. The attack therefore took place late on Monday evening.

“We didn’t hear any planes,” the spokesperson said. An investigation is underway into whether the military used a drone to attack the camp near the town of Laiza on the Chinese border.

Images of the aftermath of the attack were shared on social media:

The conflict between the army and the KIA flares up again and again
There have been repeated clashes between the army and the rebel organization KIA for decades. Since the military coup in 2021, fighting has intensified. Fifty people were killed and seventy injured in military airstrikes during a concert organized by the KIA in October last year.

The military seized power in Myanmar again in February 2021 and overthrew the government of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who was elected by a large majority.

14,000 people fled after flooding
Myanmar is also struggling with the consequences of a natural disaster. After extreme monsoon rains, parts of crisis-ridden Myanmar are flooded several meters high. The situation is particularly bad in the Bago region in the south of the country, where more than 14,000 people have had to flee. Train traffic between the country’s largest cities was also interrupted by the floods, state television reported on Tuesday. Those affected urgently asked for help on social media. It was said that clothing and food were mainly needed.

“The flooding started on Saturday after three days of continuous rain,” Nway Nway, a resident of the city of Bago, told the German news agency. “The water is very high, the situation is bad. Some people here have lost everything,” the 21-year-old said. Rescue workers currently reach affected areas only by boat, said another resident, Myo Min. “Floods often occur at this time of year, but this time it is much worse.” People were not prepared for it.
