For the third time, Tyrolean Martin Thaler narrowly escaped disaster after an unknown person hid a steel bar in a corn field. He believes he knows the perpetrator, as he described in an interview with the ‘Krone’.
The Tyrolean entrepreneur, who harvests and chops corn for farmers, and an employee were supported by a guardian angel on Sunday afternoon in Radfeld (Kufstein district). “Shortly after I drove the machine into the corn field in the Maukenbach region, I heard a loud bang. Smoke also rose in front of my machine,” says Martin Thaler.
“I immediately stopped and saw pieces of metal lying next to the tractor where an employee was driving parallel to me.” He got out and discovered parts of the cleavers. “When I checked the blade drum, I noticed that several of the forty blades were missing or damaged.”
Attacking as early as 2018 and 2022
At that moment, Thaler immediately thought of an attack like the one committed against him in 2018 and – almost to the day – a year ago.
When he later examined the corn at home in Reith im Alpbachtal on the trailer into which the chopped material was thrown, everything was clear. Using a metal detector, he found square pieces of stainless steel up to four inches long and pieces of tape in the corn. “Someone tied a metal pole to a corn plant with tape, just like in the previous attacks.”
“The metal parts flew two meters past the driver’s cabin of the tractor,” he shakes his head in disbelief. “If they had hit the cabin, my employee would have been dead!” The material damage therefore amounted to approximately 50,000 euros. The perpetrator must have specialist knowledge, because the machine would have recognized a normal, magnetic iron bar. She would have stopped.
A bounty of 10,000 euros was offered
“The attacks were always aimed at me,” the Unterlander is certain. And he thinks he knows who committed it. In addition to reporting it to the police, he has offered a bounty of 10,000 euros for concrete information.

“The perpetrator is criminal and sneaky. “It can’t go on like this anymore,” Thaler rages.
