After the major attack on Israel by the Islamist Hamas, the candidate Israeli ambassador to Austria was also clearly shocked by the events. “They rape, they kill, they slaughter. This is war!” says David Roet. He also has a clear message for pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Austria who want to march again on Wednesday evening…
According to the ambassador-designate, the fact that one of the best secret services in the world did not see the attack coming last Saturday will be a discussion that will have to be had after the war is over. He says Israel has been working in recent years to “improve the lives of Palestinians.” However, Hamas stole money to prepare for this attack. “Maybe we were naive with this question,” Roet explains.
Israelis in Austria want to go home and fight
Many Israelis in Austria called the embassy and asked if they could travel to their home country to fight. “Not because they want to fight, but because they want to fight for the lives of their own people,” says the ambassador-designate. He is certain: ‘Israel’s survival is not in danger.’ Nevertheless, this was an attack on the “way of life of modern, peace-loving democracies” in a way that has only been seen in the recent past with the terrorist organization Islamic State. State (IS).
Civilian casualties are still possible
David Roet does not want to give details about a possible ground offensive and whether there will be a counter-attack against the Lebanese Hezbollah. But Israel will “respond with great seriousness to any attack.” Efforts will be made not to harm civilians, but: “We can no longer take responsibility for the lives of civilians controlled by such a terrorist organization.”
“What are they demonstrating for?”
He has no understanding for the pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Vienna. “What are they demonstrating for? For murderers? For rapists?” asks Soot. He himself is open to any discussion about the future of Israel and whether a two-state solution would be possible, but not to discussions with those who approve of Hamas’s actions. He tells the protesters: “If you raise the flag and celebrate rapes and murders, then you are not on the right side of history and you have no soul.”
