What was already feared is now a sad certainty: at least one Austrian citizen is among the hundreds killed in the terrorist attacks in Israel. The Foreign Ministry confirmed that the person was killed by Hamas attackers in a Jewish settlement in the south of the country.
It has now become known that the murdered man was not the missing Tal Shoham (38). The father of the family, his wife Adi, 38, and their two children (daughter Yael, three, and son Nave, eight) were surprised by attackers in Kibbutz Be’eri, and there has been no trace of them since. “When our troops arrived at her home in the kibbutz in Ari, the house was empty and completely burned down,” family member Lee Korngold wrote on Facebook.
Father made the fate public
Tal Shoham’s father Gilad Korngold also made public the fate of his son and grandchildren. Korngold himself also has an Austrian passport; his mother was Viennese. She was expelled from Austria by the Nazis.
Family has informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
In the case of the deceased Austrian, the Foreign Ministry did not provide any further information – out of respect for the family, as was said. “We condemn Hamas’ barbaric terror in the strongest possible terms. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends.” The family itself informed the ministry of the death of the Austrian-Israeli dual national.
In addition to Tal Shoham and his family, an Austrian-Israeli dual national is also missing. There are fears that they have been taken to the Gaza Strip as hostages by Hamas.
The return operation has so far failed
Meanwhile, official Austria has so far tried in vain to launch a repatriation campaign from Israel for compatriots who want to leave the country. Instead of leaving for the widely announced evacuation mission on Wednesday morning – five days after the start of the Israel crisis – the Federal Army’s C-130 ‘Hercules’ remained where it was: on the Linz-Hörsching tarmac. A “technical defect” kept the machine on the ground for the time being.
