On Thursday, the editor-in-chief of the Novaya Gazeta newspaper was arrested by Russian authorities. Sergei Sokolov is accused of “denigrating the army” – but he is likely to get away with a fine, Russian media report.
Sokolov’s newspaper itself reported on the incident: the protocol for alleged discrediting states that the editor-in-chief wrote a message on the medium’s channel on the Telegram platform that contained “linguistic and psychological signs of verbal discrediting.” “I have read the protocol, but I do not agree with the above-mentioned circumstances in the protocol,” Sokolov said in a statement.
After his arrest, the journalist was taken to the courthouse by an escort of several police cars, the media ‘Sota’ reported. Some officers were armed with machine guns.
The newspaper and Tass agency reported that Sokolov risks a fine of up to 50,000 rubles (503.76 euros). Both “Novaya Gazeta” and “Sota” are considered media outlets critical of the Kremlin.
Sokolow has only been editor-in-chief for a few months
The journalist is one of their “most experienced editors,” Novaya Gazeta explains in the report. He has been working there as editor-in-chief since November last year; an overwhelming majority of the editorial staff voted for him when it came to filling the position. In 2021 he also took part in a documentary about the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
