After Hamas’ major attack on Israel, countries around the world organized evacuation flights from Tel Aviv. The first citizens have already left the war-torn country. Many more flights will follow in the coming days, also for Austrians.
As reported, the first attempt failed on Wednesday due to a technical defect. A plane should have flown from Hörsching Airport in Upper Austria to Cyprus, where people have already been brought and are being cared for in emergency shelter. A backup of chartered civilian aircraft is now being activated; the flights are scheduled on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM (local time) from Tel Aviv and Thursdays.
School classes evacuated
Germans will be evacuated on Thursday and Friday with a special Lufthansa flight. So far, 5,000 citizens have registered with the Foreign Ministry to leave Israel. 17 school classes have already been brought to safety (see video above).
The Italian government cleared about 900 citizens to fly between Tuesday and Wednesday. Swiss citizens were also returned to Zurich on Tuesday.
The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs not only had its own citizens arrested, but also people from other European countries such as Spain. On Thursday, the last people who want to leave must arrive early. They also had to make a stopover in Cyprus.
Czechs picked up by government plane
The Cypriot government itself has organized eleven additional flights in and out of Israel. Some 150 pilgrims returned. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky brought 34 Czechs straight back on his government plane after a stopover in the country on his way back from a conference in Oman.
Other countries such as Canada, Finland, Sweden and the US said the repatriation was supported, but specific dates for the flights were not given.
