It is the nightmare of many motorists: a head-on collision in a tunnel! This exact horror scenario played out on Tuesday evening in the 6.7 kilometer long Pfände tunnel. A 41-year-old was trapped in his car and had to be freed with rescue scissors.
On Tuesday around 8:50 p.m., a 78-year-old and his wife were driving a VW bus on the A14 Rhine Valley highway in the Pfänden tunnel towards Germany. One tunnel tube was closed due to construction work, causing oncoming traffic to arrive in the second tunnel tube.

For unknown reasons, an oncoming 41-year-old motorist crossed into the oncoming lane at kilometer point 7.4, resulting in a head-on collision with the couple’s VW bus. The 41-year-old was trapped in his red Dacia and had to be freed from the wreckage with rescue scissors by the emergency services of the Bregenz-Rieden and Lochau fire brigades.
The closure lasted until 11:15 p.m
The man had to be taken to the state hospital in Bregenz with injuries of an undetermined nature; Fortunately, the couple in the VW bus escaped with minor injuries. The Pfändetunnel had to be closed to all traffic until 11:15 p.m. to record the accident and carry out cleaning work.
