The “Sepperl” aquarium is as soft as butter! Because the little creature just hatched from its egg. Because the baby was born in a Weinviertler garden rather than an incubator, the birth is considered a rare natural event.
The two-euro large “Sepperl” can be enjoyed with dandelions, red clover, daisies and many other blooming delicacies from the small mown natural garden of the tortoise father. “Our descendants have no idea that it is a small ecological sensation,” smiles 70-year-old Günther Siegl from Klein Engersdorf in the municipality of Bisamberg.
The luck for the newly hatched Greek tortoise: as a former operator of two pet shops, the retiree knows exactly the needs of his protégés from southern regions.
Fokker is concerned
A total of 14 of these beautiful four-legged friends romp in their biotope, lovingly structured by owner Siegl, right on the doorstep. There must have been a spark between a man and a woman at some point. Anyway, the new addition to the family suddenly crawled out of the lettuce field. It soon became clear that “Sepperl” had hatched in a cluster of eggs dug by his mother. Siedl is sure it is a boy, because in the ground it was now below 30 degrees and only Manderls are born at these temperatures – even in the wild. It is precisely this circumstance that worries the breeder the most. As temperatures continue to warm due to climate change, the species could soon become extinct in its native areas due to a lack of masters of creation!
“Sepperl” also knows nothing about this: he has now moved to a cozy, warm terrarium. “It is still too delicate and vulnerable for outdoors. But in the spring we will go to green pastures,” Siegl promises.
