Energy crisis, inflation and less demand: this is now leading to the first restrictions for ski fans in Carinthia. This year there are restrictions in the Heiligenblut ski area.
The winter season for the Großglockner Bergbahnen starts on December 15, but this year not all lifts and slopes are available for skiers from far and wide. High energy prices and a decline in tourism mean that systems will be shut down this year.

“We work sustainably and will not use the Viehbühel lift and the Hochfleiss lift at more than 2,000 meters above sea level this winter. This also allows us to save a lot of CO₂,” explains director of the mountain railways, Peter Schmidl. But he sees no problems for skiing in the area, which has been open for more than 60 years: “It has always worked, and it will continue to do so.”
Politics has little influence on the decision of the mountain railways. “The municipality is not involved in the mountain railways, so we have nothing to do with this decision,” emphasizes Mayor Martin Lackner. “In my opinion it is currently too early to assess how severe the restrictions will actually be.”
