At about 1000 kilometers in length, the Loire is the largest of the French rivers flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the persistent heat, the level of the river is currently at a historically low level – in some places the Loire can even be crossed on foot.
The whole of France has been struggling for some time with a record drought, which has also left its mark on the Loire, whose banks are adorned with countless beautiful and famous castles. The level is extremely low and sandbanks protrude from the water, which otherwise are actually part of the riverbed.
“This is a real problem for the animal and plant world. There are really serious questions here. Personally, I like that as a holidaymaker, I prefer to go on holiday when the sun is shining than when it rains. But in the long run there will be consequences,” said tourist Cyrille Cousin.
The whole of France is affected by the drought. The soil has been drier since mid-July than during the previous record levels of 1976 and 2003.
