“Can’t help it” – climate activist stays at the court table

Date:

A climate activist was put on trial in Berlin on Thursday for coercion and resistance to state authority. But the 23-year-old used the trial for a new staging and had to be carried out of the courtroom along with the table he had clung to.

Henning Jeschke is one of the founders of the “Last Generation” and caused a stir with a hunger strike in Berlin shortly before the federal elections in autumn 2021. The 23-year-old and some of his fellow activists, who are also on strike, called for public talks with the chancellor candidates of the CDU/CSU, the Greens and the SPD. Social Democratic leader Olaf Scholz, who later became chancellor, actually agreed.

However, the issue and climate policy have not changed substantially since then. At the moment, however, there is less starving and more bonding. Because of one such roadblock, Jeschke was now on trial. But apparently the hours in the negotiating room are wasted time for the young man and the climate crisis should be discussed, as he repeatedly stressed.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t help it”
Suddenly Jeschke jumped up, glued his hand to his table and explained: “I’m sorry, but I can’t help it. I have to do this (…) Why is this still being discussed here, how many grams were in which tube of glue and where with which police officer? We finally have to bring the people who destroy the climate to justice. Fly over in private jets.”

During his speech, which Jeschke filmed with his mobile phone and streamed live, the judge left the room. Moments later, two security guards came and carried the suspect and the table out of the room.
