The trip of a senior group from Frauental in Styria almost ended in tragedy: the vehicle was on the edge and was in danger of falling into the depths. But experienced firefighters on the bus kept their nerves in check.
It would be unimaginable if some people on the bus had panicked: “That could have ended very badly,” says Wolfgang Fellner, commander of the Schamberg fire brigade.
The day out of a group of seniors from the Western Styrian municipality of Frauental ended dramatically on Wednesday: just over a kilometer before a Buschenschank, where they wanted to stop, the bus went too far to the right on a narrow municipal road – probably because a car was approaching . The bus was then at a dangerous angle and threatened to fall over a slope into the depths.
Experienced firefighters remained calm
Fortunately, the passengers also included experienced firefighters. “They responded well and asked everyone to remain calm and not move,” Fellner reports. Otherwise the crash would probably have been inevitable. After more than 20 minutes, the fire brigade managed to stabilize the bus with the help of a winch and a telehandler and create an opening. All passengers were rescued unharmed and received psychological care in the armory.
“Celebrate your birthday again”
The situation was certainly dramatic: “Some people will probably celebrate their birthday again,” says Fellner. Some of the group still enjoyed the Buschenschank snack and later they were able to retrieve the valuables and apartment keys from the wreckage.
It is known that the accident location itself is sensitive. According to the fire brigade, only cars had to be rescued from the ditch so far. This time the mission for the 60 comrades only ended after more than four hours.
Black series of bus accidents
This year’s terrifying string of serious bus accidents continues. In the spring, for example, a bus carrying a German bachelor party fell into the ground in Schladming, killing the driver and the groom. A Flixbus accident in September in Carinthia also claimed one life. And in early October, 21 people were killed in a serious accident in Venice, Italy. As is now known, the Public Prosecution Service is investigating the boss of the bus company and two civil servants.
