An animal incident caused problems for passengers in Venice on Friday morning. There was a large flock of seagulls on the runway at Marco Polo Airport – the airport had to be closed for an hour to remove the birds.
As a result, some flights scheduled to land in Venice were diverted to other cities such as Verona, Trieste and Milan. The temporary suspension was necessary to ensure the safety of passengers and flight crew, as the collision of aircraft with birds during landing or take-off can be dangerous, the airport’s operator, SAVE, said.
All available resources were used to get rid of the flock, including some hawks controlled by falconers. The airport was able to resume normal operations at 11:20 a.m. after an hour’s interruption.
Dangerous incidents involving birds
In September, a plane from the Italian military aerobatic team ‘Frecce Tricolori’ crashed after colliding with a flock of birds. The aircraft, an MB-339, overturned during the take-off phase.
The pilot was able to save himself with the parachute. A glowing part came out of the plane and hit a car carrying a five-year-old girl and her family. The girl died in the flames. The victim’s nine-year-old brother suffered burns, as did his father and mother.
