Pecked by a bird – nine-year-old is European seagull screech champion

Whoever shouts better wins: The strange European Seagull Screaming Championships once again took place in the Belgian coastal town of De Panne. The brilliant winner is nine-year-old Cooper Wallace from Derbyshire (Great Britain).

Screaming, screaming, screaming, dozens of participants tried to imitate the calls and behavior of seabirds as authentically as possible in the fun competition. “To correctly imitate the sound of seagulls, scientific observation is required,” the initiators explain. The competition aims to bring people closer to the love of seagulls – despite all prejudices.

“Seagull Boy” draws a Spiderman comparison
At the European Seagull Screaming Championship, which was held for the fourth time, screamers were waiting in three categories. In addition to the adult and junior competitions, the jury’s favor was also at stake in the colony, or the group competition. The participants managed to achieve a total of one hundred points.

Dressed as a seagull, nine-year-old Cooper emerged as the winner – the student nicknamed ‘Seagull Boy’ scored 92 points. “Spider-Man was bitten by a spider and turned into Spider-Man. “I got pecked by a seagull and now I’m a Seagull Boy,” he explained in a series of post-match interviews, explaining how he got his passion for shouting.

Winner “suspected” of the pigeons
He told the Times of London that he had great respect for seagulls and their imitation – so the imitation was more of a tribute than a mockery. “I just wanted to make the noise to remind myself that I was being picked on by someone. But I like seagulls.” But he is not entirely comfortable with it, as he explained to the BBC. “I’m still a little hesitant when it comes to eating on the beach.”

Her offspring’s hobby initially caused problems for his mother, she reported to the “Derbyshire Times”. At first she found the yelling annoying, but when she saw how talented her son was and “people were looking around looking for seagulls,” she was “so proud” of him.

Bub even surpassed adult winners
Marine biologist Jan Seys also recognized this talent: “He managed to incorporate different types of calls into his performance, and each of them impressively resembled a real seagull call. For me, he was not only the best of the young competitors, but of everyone who took part in the championship,” he told the BBC.

By the way, scientist Simão João from Portugal won in the adult category. He achieved a respectable 87 out of 100 points, five fewer than Cooper.
