More than 1,000 forestry accidents occur in Austria every year, sometimes with fatal consequences. There is a lot to do in the forests in the autumn and this year the storm damage from the summer still needs to be repaired. But be careful: working in the forest has some pitfalls, making the activity more dangerous than others and requiring special precautions.
Pinched by trunks, hit by branches, falling on steep slopes – we repeatedly report on sometimes serious, sometimes even fatal forestry accidents taking place in the forests of Tyrol and the rest of Austria. Is working in wood really that risky? “Yes,” says Georg Astner, head of the forestry department at the agricultural college in Rotholz (Tyrolean Schwaz district), “the work is more dangerous than that in other areas of work.”
