Harrowing scenes took place in a field in Burgenland. A farmer who apparently had overlooked young deer in the tall grass reacted brutally. Witnesses were shocked. Now it’s up to the parquet.
An inhabitant of a building in a quiet town of 2200 souls in the Jennersdorf district will probably never be able to forget this sight. The whole incident took place around 11.45 am on Tuesday: “I heard sounds that resembled panicky screams that I could not place at first. But they sounded terrifying,” says the resident. He followed the “wild screams”.
“I was shocked”
What the concerned neighbor saw next caused dismay and bewilderment. In broad daylight, he observed a farmer in a pasture beating two fawns with a carpenter’s hammer until the “beeping” stopped.
Animals were only two weeks old
While mowing, the farmer may have overlooked the young deer in the tall grass. The razor-sharp blades of his machine appear to have badly injured the animals’ legs. The young deer that fell victim to the work on the site was probably only two weeks old.
Perhaps he wanted to avoid greater suffering
“How can someone be so rude?” asked a passerby. It may be that the farmer wanted to spare the sore young animals even more suffering. “However, his almost beastly approach did not give the impression that he primarily wanted to prevent unnecessary suffering. The farmer beat him mercilessly,” says an eyewitness.
The mother was terrified and ran away
In order to clarify the shocking case, the police were alerted without hesitation and a report was made. The hunters were also immediately informed. “Before the fawns were seriously injured, the dam ran away in fright. The farmer should have seen it and reacted cautiously.”
One thing is certain, the young animals that were killed were laid out to be eaten not far from the scene of the accident. Whether the farmer has to answer for his actions is now a matter for the public prosecutor.
