Scholz hits a nerve: according to a study, the Germans are against the delivery of Stier

Date:

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s no to the supply of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine is likely to be supported by the population. At least 58 percent are against it, according to a recent survey by the YouGov opinion research institute.

However, 28 percent are in favor, 14 percent have not provided any information. A total of 2,169 voting Germans took part in the survey between March 1 and 5. At the beginning of February, approval of the Taurus delivery was even higher. Now it is mainly Green supporters (48 percent) who are in favor, while more voters from the Union and the FDP vote against it.

Against troops in Ukraine
German support for the Chancellor’s no to ground troops in Ukraine is even clearer. 72 percent think it is right to completely rule out such a step. Only 16 percent believe that the German federal government should keep this option open. Almost no one (two percent) is in favor of immediately sending German troops to the war zone.

However, the population is divided over the question of to what extent Ukraine should be supported with weapons. For example, fewer than one in three people (28 percent) are in favor of the delivery of Bundeswehr missiles, which have a range of 500 kilometers. Others are completely against Germany supplying weapons to Ukraine.

Scholz: “No soldiers”
With these results, the majority of the population shares the opinion of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). For example, he rejected the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles because Germany could become involved in the war if they hit Russian territory. The deployment of German forces is also out of the question for him. The Union, the Greens and the FPD are in favor of the delivery of the Taurus missiles. Germany is Ukraine’s largest arms supplier after the US.
