Some serious accidents – weather and travelers cause traffic chaos

Date:

The busy tourist traffic in the west of Austria and the snowfall in the east of Austria caused numerous traffic problems on Saturday. Accidents – sometimes with tragic results – and traffic jams were the result…

In Tyrol, there was a “surprisingly high level of travel with long waiting times at the border,” says Harald Lasser of the ÖAMTC. Snow-covered roads caused congestion in parts of Salzburg, Upper Styria, Lower Austria and Vienna. Chains have been laid on many mountain roads.

Snowfall should decrease
The expert advised to definitely use winter equipment and only use winter tires and to be very careful on the road. “Anyone who doesn’t necessarily have to drive should leave the car at home,” said Lasser.

In Vienna it continued to snow around noon and several centimeters had already accumulated in the higher areas. In the afternoon, however, according to the forecast of Geosphere Austria (formerly ZAMG), the snowfall is taking more and more breaks.

Accident drama on the A1
Accidents happened time and time again on winter roads. Three young Viennese died early in the morning on the western Autobahn (A1) near St. Pölten in the direction of Salzburg. They reportedly got out of a station wagon after an accident and were hit by a truck, according to police.

Tourist traffic causes traffic jams for miles on end
In Tyrol, people mainly traveled back and forth to Germany on Saturday. For example, there was a delay of six kilometers on the Inntalautobahn (A12) between Kufstein Süd and the Kiefersfelden border crossing and, according to Lasser, there was also a delay of “six, seven kilometers” on the Zillertalstraße (B 169) from the valley. It looks like a kind of shift change for holidaymakers,” said the expert.
