Russia says it has intercepted two drones over the Black Sea coastal city of Sochi. Air defenses became active in the resort popular with tourists on Saturday morning around 7:10 a.m. (6:10 a.m. CEST), Sochi Mayor Alexei Kopajgorodski said on Telegram.
The unmanned missiles were shot down over the sea and there were no injuries or damage. This could not initially be independently verified. The airport in Sochi remains operational, Kopajgorodski added.
Multiple explosions
The Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reported several explosions in the city, citing residents of Sochi.
Russia has been waging a war of aggression against neighboring Ukraine for almost twenty months. Against this backdrop, there have been repeated suspected Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian military infrastructure in recent months.
Airport attacked
Sochi, which is about 500 miles (800 kilometers) from Ukrainian-controlled territory, has also been affected. According to Russian information, combat drones attacked a major airport in the city a few weeks ago.
