Can an e-bike battery explode? And if so, how do you respond correctly and how can you prevent something like this? Videos of exploding batteries appear in the media time and time again, but their origin and authenticity often cannot be verified. The “Krone” started its own test and provides all the answers on the subject.
E-bikes are ingenious, popular and are making more and more Austrians enthusiastic about cycling. The energy for the drive is supplied by powerful lithium-ion batteries, which are, however, flammable under certain conditions – like all batteries.
Overcharging or overheating is almost never a problem thanks to modern safety mechanisms. More later. But a bicycle fall in which the e-bike with battery hits a sharp stone, for example when mountain biking, can lead to a short circuit in the battery and thus cause a chain reaction, a ‘thermal runaway’.
