The prime minister of India, Narendra Modiannounced this Saturday the your country’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympicsat the opening of the 141st Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the city of Bombay.
“India will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to host the Olympic Games in 2036. in the country, this is the historic dream and aspiration of 1.4 billion Indians,” Modi said at an inaugural gala where he was joined by IOC President Thomas Bach.
Modi emphasized India’s ability to successfully host major world-class sporting events, such as the cricket world cup currently underway in the Asian country, as well as political events, such as the recent G20 summit.
“India is ready to host a large-scale global eventand the world saw it during our G20 presidency,” he added.
So far, there are four bids to host the 2036 Olympic Games: those of Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey and Poland.
The Indian president is also excited about the possible inclusion of cricket, the undisputed king sport in South Asia, due to the 2028 Olympic Games, following the recommendation of the IOC Executive for a session that will begin meeting tomorrow in Bombay.
The IOC could add, in total, five new sports: baseball/softball, cricket, squash, flag football (American football in its non-tackle form) and lacrosse.
The organization should also review the participation in the Paris Games of Russian and Belarusian athletes, who were excluded from the competitions after the invasion of Ukraine and have now been readmitted as neutrals.
In this sense, the executive body of the Olympic body announced on Thursday the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (COR) “with immediate effect” for the inclusion of Ukrainian regions.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas militias adds more uncertainty to the political landscape.
“Our mission for peace is more important now than ever, and we witness so many wars and conflicts in the world today, so we must all make the Paris 2024 Olympic Games a symbol of peace,” said Bach.
