A fire that broke out destroyed Xiaolding Liang’s restaurant in Hallein-Burgfried in Salzburg. She was just taking a quick shower when the flames broke out. An attentive neighbor prevented something worse.
“It cost us everything to build the restaurant,” Xialding Liang said in despair and shock, looking at the remains of her storage room, which was almost completely destroyed by a fire on Thursday evening. The walls and ceilings in the adjacent kitchen and guest room on Salzachtalstrasse are also black with soot.
Rice cooker as a possible cause
The acrid smell of charred plastic and starch fills the air. “I had just been taking a shower upstairs in the apartment for ten minutes when the neighbor rang the doorbell and shouted, ‘Fire, fire,’” Liang said through tears. She fell down the stairs with her husband and was able to escape to safety. The neighbor called the fire brigade. After 45 minutes the fire was under control at midnight. A rice cooker could be the cause.
“We wanted to build something for ourselves”
Liang cannot say how much damage there is. The intangible loss is more serious. “We only moved there in March and opened the restaurant in August,” the Chinese woman reports sadly. They invested 15,000 euros in new electricity lines and the kitchen. “We wanted to build something for ourselves.” Despite the blow of fate, she does not think about giving up: “My heart and soul are in this. “I’ll keep going,” Liang says, sweeping up the charred remains with garbage bags at his feet.
