Israel bombs the south – an airstrike likely kills another Hamas mastermind

Date:

The Israeli army says it has killed another mastermind behind the massacres of Hamas attackers among Israelis. Billal Al Kedra, commander of terrorist units in southern Khan Yunis, was killed in airstrikes the night before, the army said on Sunday morning.

Other terrorists from Hamas and the militant Palestinian group Islamic Jihad were also killed. According to the Ministry of Health there, 2,329 Palestinians have been killed and 9,714 injured in the Gaza Strip since the start of the latest conflict on October 7.

Attacked more than 100 targets
The Israeli military had previously reported the deaths of two suspected Hamas masterminds behind last weekend’s attacks. The Israeli army said on Sunday that more than 100 Hamas military targets were attacked in Zaytun, Khan Yunis and West Jabalia. These include operational command centers, military facilities, dozens of anti-tank missile launchers and observation posts. Islamic Jihad command centers were also hit.

According to a report in the US media, the Israeli army has postponed the planned invasion of the Gaza Strip by a few days due to unfavorable weather conditions. The ground offensive was originally scheduled to begin this weekend but was postponed due to cloudy skies and resulting problems with visibility for pilots and drones, the New York Times reported, citing three unnamed senior Israeli officers.

Is there a threat of a second war front?
Joshua Sarka, a senior Israeli Foreign Ministry official, accuses Iran of trying to open a second war front by supplying weapons to or through Syria. Sarka confirmed similar speculations in a message on the short message service X.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also plans to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as part of his Middle East tour, according to a US government official. The meeting is scheduled for Sunday morning in the Saudi capital Riyadh. Salman is the de facto ruler of the kingdom and one of the most influential and powerful politicians in the region.

Blinken is also expected in Egypt later today. The first stop on his trip was Israel on Thursday. He also visited Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. Blinken wants to prevent the war between Israel and Hamas from escalating into a larger regional conflict and he wants to secure the release of the hostages kidnapped by Hamas.
