Twelve injured – flames continue to rage in Athens and Friuli

Date:

On Wednesday, the fire continued in northeast Athens and in Friuli, Italy. The flames destroyed many homes and some towns were evacuated. In Greece, 12 people, including three firefighters, had to be taken to nearby hospitals with respiratory problems.

A children’s hospital and seven towns have already been evacuated due to the massive fire in Athens. According to a spokesman for the fire service, nine fire-fighting planes and seven fire-fighting helicopters were in action on Wednesday morning. In addition, the crews of 120 fire engines were added. Thick, brownish plumes of smoke could be seen in almost every part of the city. Due to limited visibility, emergency services blocked parts of the highway connecting Athens to the airport. The fires raged in forested areas as well as residential areas of the villages around Mount Penteli (see video above), the state broadcaster reported.

Wind fanned small fire into big conflagration
The cause of the fire is as yet unclear. According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon and was initially small. Within a very short time strong winds fanned it into a major fire. In the northeast of Athens, large fires had already broken out in the summer of 2021.

In Friuli, Italy, the cause of the fires that have been raging since Monday is also unknown. 350 hectares of forest were destroyed between Italy and Slovenia. The flames are not yet under control, Slovenian firefighters and volunteers were involved in the extinguishing work in the karst area on Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday, a production facility of shipping company Fincantieri was closed due to the health of the staff. 3,000 employees of the shipbuilder were affected. The fire that broke out on Friday in a wooded suburb of the popular holiday resort of Bibione near Venice has now been extinguished.
