According to initial predictions, the opposition will win in the parliamentary elections in Poland. Former Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s civilian coalition and two smaller opposition parties were ahead of the right-wing camp surrounding the ruling PiS, a post-election poll showed on Sunday evening.
Accordingly, a total of 248 seats are held by the Citizens Coalition, the Third Way and the Left, while the right-wing nationalist PiS and the right-wing extremist Confederation Party together have 212 seats.
First predictions:
Tusk: “We succeeded”
Opposition leader Donald Tusk (66) cheered after the results were announced: “We did it! Democracy has won.”
The elections concern the distribution of the 460 seats in the Sejm and the 100 seats in the Senate, the second chamber of parliament. The final results are not expected to be announced until Tuesday.
