The online service Tiktok, which is especially popular among children and young people, says it has removed more than 500,000 videos and stopped 8,000 live broadcasts since the start of the war between Israel and the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas on October 7.
The company said in its blog on Sunday that the steps were taken due to a violation of usage guidelines. The teams that search for banned content have also been strengthened.
Platform is “misused”
EU Commissioner for Digital Affairs Thierry Breton warned Tiktok last week against spreading misinformation about the war. The platform is being abused “to spread illegal content and misinformation in the EU,” he criticized. The platform has a “special responsibility” to protect it from violent content, such as images of hostage situations.
According to researchers, online networks have been flooded with false information since Hamas’ major attack on Israel and Israel’s retaliatory attacks on the Gaza Strip. The scale and speed of the spread of so-called fake news are unprecedented.
Millions of people fled
More than a million people have fled northern Gaza due to an expected Israeli ground offensive. The Israeli army continuously targeted the Gaza Strip and completely closed off the densely populated coastal area.
Relief supplies are not allowed through
Meanwhile, the confirmed number of hostages kidnapped by Hamas militants in Israel has risen to 199 people. According to the union, eleven Palestinian journalists have been killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip (see video above). In addition, twenty other journalists were injured. The aid supplies from various countries that have arrived at the border crossing between Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip and Egypt have not been allowed through so far.
