The next serious accident involving a tractor transport occurred on Monday morning in the Oberwart district. Shortly before 7am, a smuggler may have fallen asleep at the wheel of a van – the fully occupied van hit the guardrail and was thrown over the guardrail – seven were injured in hospital.
The spectacular accident took place on the national highway near Hannersdorf. According to the initial investigations, the police assume that microsleep may have been the cause. The box truck – probably with 17 refugees in the hold – collided with the guardrail, rolled over and fell over a slope.
Taken to hospital
Seven injured people had to be rescued by emergency services, including possibly a tugboat. Emergency services took five patients to Oberwart Hospital and two others to Güssing Hospital.
“One accident victim was particularly seriously injured,” the helpers said. Four fire brigades with 50 volunteers, rescue services and police were on site for more than two hours. At the same time, a search was underway for escaped migrants and for another smuggler who managed to escape.
