In perhaps the most Australian video ever, a man filmed himself fending off a kangaroo to save his dog. The marsupial had put “Hatchi” in a headlock and tried to push the dog underwater. Mick Moloney eventually intervened and “had a bit of a row” with the muscular “thing” who looked “like he had escaped from prison”.
Mick Moloney, who lives in Mildura, Victoria, Australia, was walking along the Murray River on Sunday. After some time he noticed that one of his dogs, “Hatchi”, was missing.
“I looked down at the river and behind the reeds I saw a huge kangaroo… standing there with its arms in the water staring at me,” Mick told ABC Radio Melbourne. Mick saw that the kangaroo had grabbed his dog, who was whining and trying to escape. With loud cries he tried to chase the marsupial away, but without success. “Okay, I have to go in now,” he finally resigned.
“No one else would believe me!”
When he approached the animal in the water, he was shocked. “The muscles on that thing, I thought that thing just got out of jail or something… it was huge!” Then he took his cell phone out of his pocket to film: “No one else would believe me!”
He then stated that he had had “a bit of a fight” with the kangaroo: “The kangaroo looked like he wanted to knock my legs off. I splashed some water on his face and wanted to run away.” Ultimately this worked and Mick was able to get to safety with his dog. Shortly after, the video quickly spread online.
Out of pure defiance, he did not want to change his running route despite the incident. He has to take this route “because I don’t want the kangaroos to think we’re scared.” But he may have to keep the dog on a leash in the future. Lisa Palma, executive director of Wildlife Victoria, highly recommended this. Because the dog would probably have chased the kangaroo beforehand – and therefore would have attacked.
