Are the bathrooms empty as the recently reduced Covid rates have increased again this year? The “Krone” tested what a bathing day in Vienna costs.
24 degrees, clear blue sky above the city of Vienna, there is a gentle breeze blowing. The perfect day to spend the afternoon with the family in the outdoor pool, splashing, sliding and relaxing. What you should not forget besides sunscreen and swimming gear: a well-filled wallet. Because the day tickets, which increased from the Covid special price of three euros last year and again in 2020 to 6.20 euros for an adult, are causing quite a stir in many Vienna.
Lots of space to romp
Consumption is also more important than before. Drinks, food or ice cream are also very expensive in the bath canteens, as a local visit with a family in the Ottakringer Bad shows (see photo). Amazing: Despite the fine weather, the outdoor pool in the 16th arrondissement was sparsely visited on Thursday afternoon. A plus for families: no waiting times at the slide, plenty of space in the pools and on the lawn.
High costs can be avoided
The kids had a great afternoon and with savings tips such as traveling by public transport to avoid parking costs, bringing your own snack or family tickets, you can easily avoid costs.
ÖVP wants rate change
The tickets are too expensive for the ÖVP Vienna, which is fiercely critical of the polar rates that have now gone up again: “An increase in the polar rates, especially in view of the current crises, is simply irresponsible,” says state party chairman Karl Mahrer. “The discounted tickets in recent years have certainly proven their worth. The current developments and the lack of crowds in the pools should finally cause the responsible city council (Christoph Wiederkehr, NEOS) to reconsider.”
Good visitor numbers in long-term comparison
On Tuesday, the ÖVP will submit a motion for a resolution to the city council. The Viennese baths soothe. In mid-May they had 80,265 guests. That is a third less than in the record year 2018, but more than in the four previous years, when only 40,300 guests were counted during the same period.
