Extreme weather and warming have consequences for agriculture. However, local companies appear to be inventive when it comes to adaptation. Artichokes, grapes and other exotic plants now grow in Tyrol. Farmers arm themselves against storms with a lot of technology and sometimes very simple tricks.
In the apple stronghold of Haiming, fruit farmers have their hands full these weeks. The harvest is in full swing and during the Haiming market days (2nd date on October 21) the aim is to market the regional products. 60,000 apple trees grow at the foot of the Tschirgant and are collected in the Haiming fruit warehouse. General Manager Alexandra Harrasser speaks about a very difficult year: “The frost in the spring, the very warm September – that was not optimal for the crops,” Harrasser describes the situation and speaks of harvest losses of 40 to 50 percent in some cases.
