Trial in Linz – Battering ram gang stole watches worth one million euros

Date:

At the Linz Regional Court, a pair of Romanian brothers stood before the jury. They are accused of using brutal force to clear two jewelry stores in Linz and Salzburg. The loot included luxury watches and jewelry worth a total of around one million euros, but the trial ended with a postponement.

A pair of brothers from Romania (42 and 48 years old) are said to have stolen watches and jewelry worth over a million euros in two burglaries at jewelry stores in Linz and Salzburg. To enter the stores, the defendants took brazen action: they mounted wooden poles on the trunks of their cars and rammed them into the entrance doors as they reversed. Within minutes, the perpetrators had emptied the display cases and fled in cars fitted with stolen license plates.

Trial in Linz
On Wednesday the brothers stood before the jury in Linz. They are charged with serious commercial burglaries as part of a criminal organization and theft of license plates, which carry penalties of one to 10 years in prison. However, the day of the hearing at the Linz Regional Court ended after just under 1.5 hours with a postponement until January 2024. The second defendant insisted on formal extradition proceedings, preventing negotiations from taking place.

Declared partly guilty
The main defendant pleaded guilty to the burglary in Linz in October 2017, but not to the one in Salzburg in February 2020. Here his legal representative announced new evidence. These are intended to prove that his client was not in Austria at the time of the crime, but was on holiday in the Dominican Republic. The brothers will remain in custody in the prisons of Linz and Salzburg until the trial continues – this is intended to prevent possible conspiracy.
