There are new findings in the case of a teacher who allegedly abused dozens of students in Vienna over the years. The alleged attacks could have been prevented if a complaint filed against him with authorities in 2013 had not been resolved; the research report is now available.
The serious allegations are that he was drugged and sexually abused and that he took enormous amounts of photo and video material. Presumably Roland S. was able to cause mischief for years at a Viennese secondary school, at a holiday camp and at a sports club. It was said that at least 40 underage boys fell victim to the teacher.
It was only in 2019 that he was assigned to interrogate the suspect. But it didn’t get that far: the teacher committed suicide after the complaint was filed against him.
But that was not the only thing: a report had already been filed against the man in 2013 by a now adult victim. The attack is said to have taken place in a holiday camp in 2006; the alleged victim was 13 years old at the time. However, this act of abuse mysteriously disappeared.
Krone.at now has the investigation report of the investigations against the officials responsible at the time. The Federal Office for the Prevention and Combating of Corruption (BKA) wrote the report for the Public Prosecution Service.
Chilling statements from the interviewees can be read on more than twenty pages. Reason for investigation: Suspicion of abuse of public authority. Because when a victim from the Wolfgangsee holiday camp sought help from the police in July 2013, almost everything you could imagine went wrong.
Victim’s name “mistyped”
How might the act of abuse decrease? According to witness statements, the facts of the case have been recorded, but the victim’s name was mistyped or the names of the perpetrator and the victim were mixed up, an insider told the Crown.
“Please send to…”
And where did the deed continue? To the post office? “It could also be that she simply put a post-it note saying ‘Send to…’ on the unenveloped file itself.” However, she no longer remembers the shipping destination itself.
“Difficult story”
These are just some of the startling statements made by the accused officers in the report. Such ‘run-throughs’ were not uncommon; the crime scene was not under the department’s jurisdiction at the time. However, it was clear to the official at the time that “this would be a difficult situation”…
And finally it says: “Due to a lack of further research, the BAK is not planning any further action.” The investigations have therefore already been stopped. In any case, it can be assumed that if the abusive teacher had already been investigated in 2013, countless boys could have been spared the remaining six years of his life.
