Free-roaming Bactrian camels caused strange scenes in Hallein (Salzburg) on Monday evening. Such trips with circus animals are not uncommon. Camels also escaped from their circus enclosure in Zell am See last year. Passersby prevented something worse from happening.
Camels with an urge for freedom, like the animals of the ‘Circus King’ in Hallein on Monday, are apparently not uncommon. Last August, a reader of “Krone” was introduced to four escaped circus camels. Shortly after 7am the Bactrian camels trotted around Zell am See. The woman and her husband saw the animals and at first could not believe their eyes. The camels happily chewed on bushes and trees on the B311. The animals had escaped from the “Classic Circus Berlin”.
Always problems with circus animals
The couple rode the camels back to the circus grounds. The two tried in vain to confront circus employees who stopped in Areit’s parking lot with their observation. The men understood neither German nor English.
Circus animals repeatedly escaped and wandered through communities. In addition to the camels in Hallein and Zell, Bactrian camels also wandered in Kirchbichl (Tyrol) in June 2022. In July there were llamas in Elixhausen, also from ‘Circus King’, weeks earlier llamas had paralyzed train traffic in Vienna.
