After 16 years in prison, an American was proven innocent. Now Leonard Cure was killed by police during a traffic stop.
Leonard Cure spent more than sixteen years behind bars for a robbery he did not commit. It wasn’t until 2020 that the black man was finally released. But just three years later, his life of freedom ended tragically: a police officer pulled the 53-year-old driver out of traffic for speeding in Georgia – and shot him.
A camera on the dashboard of the police car recorded Cure being arrested at 7:30 am. In the video, the officer yells at the driver to get out and put his hands on the back of the car. Cure sounds surprised: “I didn’t do anything.” The police officer then pulls out his stun gun. Cure tries to calm the situation. But the officer ends up using the stun gun as Cure tries to push him away.
“Officer was aggressive”
The police officer then hits with a baton before drawing the revolver and shooting Cure. The victim later died in hospital.
The 53-year-old had just bought a house in Georgia from the US state of Florida with part of his compensation of $817,000 (the equivalent of more than 770,000 euros). His family is now going to court again. The video is about civil rights Attorney Benjamin Crump Clear: “The officer was aggressive from the start and never de-escalated the situation.”
