More than 170 km/h at altitude and 100 km/h in the valleys: our state is currently being hit by the strongest Föhn storm in the last three years. In the evening the ghost is almost over again.
The foehn was already announced on Thursday, picked up speed during the night and showed its ruthless side on Friday: GeoSphere Austria has issued an orange wind warning for Friday (level three out of four), Nikolas Zimmermann of the UBIMET weather service. foehn storm is expected “which will only hit the country once every three to four years.”
These are the hotspots
“The hotspots will be the main Alpine ridge, the area around Nauders, the Stubai Alps and the larger area of Innsbruck with the Wipptal,” the meteorologist predicts. The Zillertal team will also be hit hard.
Although it concerns the well-known Southern Foehn, the Northern Alps are also affected – albeit slightly less hard. For example, in Ehrwald or Leutasch you have to “fasten your seat belt”. However, it will probably be quieter in the Kufstein region, in the Kaiserwinkel and north of the Kitzbühel Alps.
Peak until noon
The peak of the storm is expected in the afternoon. At Patscherkofel, GeoSphere Austria recorded wind peaks of up to 170 km/h in the morning. Speeds of 100 km/h can be expected in the valleys, including in the capital. At the same time, temperatures rise to remarkable levels. “They climb to 23 degrees – mostly in the lowlands.”
The famous ‘Föhnwall’ of clouds will rise south of the capital. This time the impressive weather phenomenon is a little different than usual. “It will probably extend quite far north as far as the Serles and the Patscherkofel,” says the UBIMET meteorologist.
Rain from the west in the afternoon
Towards the afternoon some rain falls from the west, and towards the evening the foehn calms down hesitantly. “Saturday will start with just a little bit of thunder, and the sun will shine at times, especially in the morning. Overall, it will be changeable, with some rain,” the expert predicts.
