The 53-year-old from the community is still in shock. “This has never happened before,” says Markus K. in an interview with the “Krone”. K. lives on a mountain farm about 800 meters above sea level. It was around noon when he and one of his colleagues were surprised by the violent hurricane winds. “I was in the apartment when it started. I heard glass breaking and ran outside.”
The farm was without power for hours
The hurricane tore the roof tiles off the roofs, one even destroyed K.’s front door. “We would be dead if such a stone were to hit us.” Even the secured crane could not withstand the storm and wobbled. A car was also damaged. The storm lasted until about 4:30 p.m. “There was no electricity then,” said the Tyrolean.
Not seriously injured thanks to clothing
Fortunately, the 53-year-old and his colleague were unharmed during the storm. K. was hit by some small objects, but was not seriously injured thanks to his clothing. Yet he is in shock. After a man died in the violent hurricane on Friday, the rest of the state was also deeply shocked.
Strong hurricane gusts have been hitting Austria since Friday morning. The stormy southern Föhn even caused wind peaks of almost 200 km/h on the Patscherkofel.
Geosphere Austria issued the highest warning level “Red” for the rear Zillertal, although “Orange” was still in effect in some areas. In the Hohe Tauern near the Rudolfshütte in Salzburg 171 km/h was measured, and at Semmering in Lower Austria 150 km/h.
