Urgently needed – Gaza border open: First aid deliveries are being rolled out

Date:

A cautious sigh of relief for the Palestinian civilian population, who in the course of the war between the terrorist organization Hamas and Israel is not only caught between the fronts, but also has to endure inhumane conditions in makeshift tent cities or rubble landscapes without electricity, food and sufficient water. The border crossing at Rafah opened on Saturday morning. First aid deliveries are already rolling out.

Some trucks drove from Egypt to the Palestinian area from the Rafah border crossing, according to images on Egyptian television. Accordingly, goods from twenty trucks of medicines are to be delivered to the Gaza Strip.

It is still unclear how long the border will remain open for aid deliveries. Recently, about 170 trucks carrying humanitarian supplies were piled up on the Egyptian side in front of the border crossing. The trucks are ready and “standby,” a spokeswoman for the World Health Organization (WHO) said in Cairo on Saturday.

Two trucks were expected to cross the border on Saturday evening, the German news agency has learned from security circles. The trucks were loaded with medicines and, according to media reports, also with shrouds. A team of medical professionals would also enter the Gaza Strip with the trucks. Preparations for the entry were then halted due to new airstrikes by Israel in the early morning hours, security circles said.

“For our people in Palestine”
Rafah is seen as the only way to bring urgently needed aid to the Gaza Strip. Israel had agreed to open the border crossing for the delivery of water, food and medicine. The trucks and ambulances drove to the border with a large contingent of security forces. On some it is written: “For our people in Palestine.”
